However, some women are interested in planning a caesarean section for the sake of convenience or to avoid the rigours of labour. If this is how you feel, it is important to note that, while caesarean section is considered safe, it is associated with a higher risk of complications for both mother and baby compared with vaginal birth.

Caesarean section is not the easy way out by any means. One possible complication during caesarean section is heavy bleeding, called hemorrhaging. The uterus is a large, muscular organ with many blood vessels. Therefore, when an incision is made in the uterus, it can lead to hemorrhaging. Sometimes a blood transfusion is needed to replace the blood that is lost during the caesarean section. Very rarely the bleeding cannot be stopped and a surgical removal of the uterus, called a hysterectomy, must be performed.

Pain is a common complication after caesarean section. Women sometimes do not realize that they will feel a considerable amount of pain, lasting several weeks after the surgery. The pain after caesarean section is more severe than that after a vaginal birth. There are a number of other complications that can occur during or after a caesarean section.

These include:. Caesarean section is generally a safe procedure for the baby. An added bonus is that babies born by caesarean section often have nicely shaped, rounded heads if there has been no labour. These include vertical and transverse incisions, and there are variations in the specific ways the incisions can be undertaken.

The review of studies identified four trials involving women. The Joel-Cohen incision showed better outcomes than the Pfannenstiel incision in terms of less fever for women, less postoperative pain, less blood loss, shorter duration of surgery and shorter hospital stay.

However, the trials did not assess possible long-term problems associated with different surgical techniques. The Joel-Cohen incision has advantages compared with the Pfannenstiel incision. These are: less fever, pain and analgesic requirements; less blood loss; shorter duration of surgery and hospital stay. These advantages for the mother could be extrapolated to savings for the health system. However, these trials do not provide information on severe or long-term morbidity and mortality.
