Considering how in love they were, how could they be so bad at communicating? Most fans will agree that Joey and Rachel's relationship wouldn't have worked due to their loyalty to Ross.

Despite Ross giving them his blessing, it seemed out of character for Joey and Rachel that they would cross this line. Not only did Rachel reject Joey's feelings in season 8 but Joey constantly pushed for her and Ross to get back together. Even in the hospital when she and Ross had Emma he was telling them how they were meant to be. If that is how he felt, then why did they get together?

At the time, Roschel fans rejoiced at the couple's reunion in the season 10 finale. However, time has allowed many fans to reflect on the show's ending and realize that they may have been better off apart. Because they are no good for one another. For one, they always tried to sabotage each other's happiness. Two, they were extremely possessive and controlling of one another. Three, there was still a lingering resentment over Ross's cheating.

They want to tell Ross first, but every attempt is thwarted. However, Ross discovers their relationship accidentally after he walks in on them making out. Joey is unaware that Rachel has a crush on him and it all comes to a head in Barbados at Ross' conference. Ross' feelings for Joey's girlfriend, Charlie, are growing, and while they work on his presentation, Joey and Rachel hang out together. In this episode, the writers spotlight how similar Rachel and Joey are, even laughing at the same things, in an attempt to show that they are actually compatible.

In the end, Rachel confesses her feelings to Joey, which he's unsure about until witnessing Ross kissing Charlie. He returns to Rachel's room and they finally kiss, changing the show forever. After discovering Rachel and Joey are officially an item, Ross tries to convince them he's fine with it, but after a disastrous double date with Joey, Rachel, and his now-girlfriend Charlie, Ross admits he's not all right. However, he gives the relationship his blessing after Joey tells him he's crazy about her and Ross realizes he and Rachel have been broken up for six years and that it's time for him to move on.

This was a strange episode for viewers because Joey and Rachel are in full-on couple mode, something some in the audience found very uncomfortable. With Ross' blessing, this set the stage for the Rachel and Joey romance, but with all the build-up, it would only last one more episode. Now officially a couple, and with Ross' blessing, Joey and Rachel attempt to finally consummate their relationship, but after finding themselves unable to take the next step, they realize they are just too good of friends to be in a romantic relationship.

This marked the end of the Joey and Rachel courtship. The two remain roommates but their relationship is only brought up once more briefly, for laughs, by Rachel. At the show's conclusion later that season, the ill-fated romance is swept under the rug, as viewers don't even get to see Rachel's final goodbye to Joey, despite their recent history. After a scuffle and a trip to the emergency room after Joey forced Ross to punch him and then ducked , Joey and Rachel both assure Ross that nothing will happen and that they are just friends.

However, later in the season , Rachel has a fight with Ross, moves back in with Joey and, later on, has a dream where she kisses him. After that she begins to develop feelings for him. She hints at him a few times, but he stays oblivious. Eventually, Joey starts dating Charlie, which upsets both Rachel and Ross, who has feelings for Charlie.

While in Barbados, Joey breaks up with Charlie and soon learns about Rachel's feelings for him. He turns her down, however, because of Ross. Almost immediately afterward, Joey sees Ross kissing Charlie and returns to Rachel's room and kisses her. Joey and Rachel decide to not take their relationship any further, unless Ross is OK with it. Back in New York, they both attempt to talk to Ross about it, but something stops them each time. Eventually Ross walks in on Joey and Rachel kissing, which he is clearly not OK with, but tries to mask it.

After an extremely awkward double date with Ross and Charlie, Joey talks to Ross and he tells him that he will make himself be OK with Joey and Rachel's relationship. Joey and Rachel continue to date, but can't make it past kissing. Every time Joey would slide his hand across Rachel's thigh, she would slap it away, and Joey could not manage to get Rachel's bra open.
