Types of ice and cold packs Ice towel. Wet a towel with cold water and squeeze it until it is just damp. Fold the towel, place it in a plastic bag, and freeze it for 15 minutes. Then take a break for about 2 hours to allow the skin to recover and avoid damage. In general, ice is better for acute or recent injuries that have occurred within the last 2 or 3 days.
